Someone — your employer, your bank, the extranjeria office — is asking you for your empadronamiento. If you are not sure what that is or how to get it, you are in the right place.
What Is Empadronamiento?
The empadronamiento is your official registration with the Ayuntamiento de Madrid. It proves that you live at a specific address. The document you receive is called a volante de empadronamiento — and you will be asked for it constantly.
Who Needs to Register?
Everyone who lives in Madrid needs to be empadronado — regardless of nationality or immigration status. EU citizens, non-EU citizens, students, remote workers, digital nomads. Even if your situation is not fully regularised yet, you can and should register.
